Happy Single Awarneness Day

I don’t know about you, but I love holidays. I love the idea of thousands of people all focused on a common idea, person or mythology. St. Valentine’s Day or Single Awareness Day is no exception. Being a woman, Valentine’s Day is easy, I sit back, wait to see what my significant other puts together and enjoy; or I fain disappointment beyond repair if he does nothing. Then at the earliest opportunity I gossip with my girlfriends about the outcome of the day.

As a single woman, I have to put more thought into the day, and now Single Awareness Day is second only to My Personal New Year (otherwise known as My Birthday). Here’s how to make Single Awareness Day one of your favorite holidays too:

If you have the opportunity, take the day off. This year most people won’t have to because February 14th is a Saturday this year, but if you work one of those 24/7 jobs, ask for it off.

The most important, long term relationship anyone will ever have is the relationship with self. Look at Single Awareness Day as a day to appreciate and celebrate that relationship. Treat yourself to something you will really enjoy. Choose wisely; if you know that seeing couples swooning and celebrating St. Valentine’s Day will upset you, avoid restaurants, couples spas, movies, and other popular couple’s activities.

  1. Go on a challenging hike, bike ride or run.
  2. Visit your parents or grandparents.
  3. Do some volunteer work; if you have the means leave the country and share your love with the world, Voluntourism.
  4. Golf a round in the middle of the day, by yourself, with friends or maybe with strangers.
  5. Take a long indulgent bath and listen to some great music or an audio book.
  6. Finish a project that was on your resolution list: paint a room; maybe knock-out your taxes.
  7. Host a Passion Party or have an in-home professional massage.
  8. Get other single friends together for game night, karaoke, or a session of Rock Band.
  9. Try a difficult new recipe.
  10. Go see an adult film.

The whole point is to celebrate who you are and the life you are living today. Don’t wallow or lament over what you wish this day looked like.

Plan now. If you don’t want to spend the day alone contact your single friends and put a plan together for all of you.

Every holiday is an opportunity to make memoires; control the connotation of the memories. Make February 14th a good day, a fun day, a day you look forward to every year. If you cannot make a happy memory for yourself make a good memory for others. There are thousands of people who will spend that day alone, sit with them hear their stories.

Remember self -pity is never sexy.
